Manchester United edged past Everton to move to within five points of the Premier League’s top four.
Jose Mourinho’s side were second best throughout Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat by Juventus, but climbed up two places to eighth after victory at Old Trafford over the Toffees.
The hosts went ahead through Paul Pogba’s fortuitous strike – making a stuttering 26-step run-up to take a penalty that was saved by Jordan Pickford, then tucking home the rebound when it fell straight back to him.
Pogba fed fellow Frenchman Anthony Martial to curl in a delightful, first-time finish from the edge of the box in the second half.

Talks between Arsenal and midfielder Aaron Ramsey over a new contract have broken down. Ramsey’s existing deal expires on 30 June 2019 and the Gunners had been hopeful of tying up fresh terms. But negotiations have stopped and, barring an unlikely resumption, the 27-year-old will be sold in January or become a free agent next summer. Former Chelsea striker, Diego Costa has said that he never should have joined Chelsea. The former striker also threw a dig at Antonio Conte, the manager who exiled him before he moved to Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window in 2017. Costa spent four successful seasons in the Spanish capital before signing for Chelsea in 2014 for a transfer fee of £32million. In his four years at Stamford Bridge, Costa won two Premier League titles and the League Cup.    Maurizio Sarri has left Eden Hazard out of Chelsea’s travelling 21-man squad for their Europa League group-stage opener at PAOK Salonika. The Belgian forward, 27, scored a hat-trick against Cardiff at the weekend but has not made the trip to Greece.
